The arrival of summer means a busy season for the Indianapolis Yacht Club. In the past month, the club has unveiled several new renovations.

With its inception in 1956, the Yacht Club has moved from its home at Morse Reservoir to its new location on Geist Reservoir. The Yacht Club offers two types of membership, including social and boating, but the club also offers service to nonmembers, including rental of its facilities.

The three level “castle” building dates back to 1989. The top floor includes a loft area that seats up to 50 people. On the main level, two patios overlook the waterside. The main level banquet hall seats 170 people and features a full dance floor, a full kitchen for catering and a bar. This area saw renovations just a few years ago with new paint, window treatments and a new bar top.

But the bulk of the recent improvements has been in the club’s lower level.

“It was stuck in the 80s,” says Club Manager Pattie Mayo, who began her tenure at the club working in the office. “The members area gets very well used in the summertime with the pool, and besides replacing the carpeting, it hadn’t been touched since it was built.”

Renovations began last October and were recently completed in April. The lower level now looks completely new, with the removal of a divider wall and the addition of a free-standing bar. With fresh paint, new chairs and tabletops, and a redesigned grill, the club’s lower level is ready for the summer season.

Upcoming improvements for the club should include new carpeting on the third level. Mayo also looks to add new chairs and lounges around the heated pool, open from May to September.

Mayo is excited to greet the busy season with a fresh look for the club.

“As long as the weather is nice, we’ll be extremely busy. Not just with members but with private events,” says Mayo, who especially enjoys meeting and greeting all the members at the club.

Mayo looks forward to new challenges and a new vision for the Indianapolis Yacht Club as it seeks to serve not just its members but also the general public. For more information on how to become a member, give them a call at 317-335-2582 or visit them online at indianapolisyachtclub.org.
