Fourth grade classes use rats to study nutrition, health
Rats have arrived in fourth grade classrooms at Cumberland Road Elementary! As part of a unit called “The Great Grow Along from the National Dairy Council, students are in the midst of a four-week study using the rats to focus on diet, nutrition and exercise.
Fourth grade teacher David Greiwe said each classroom received two baby rats that were about 3 weeks old when they arrived. Students do controlled experiments with the rats’ diets. During week one, the rats received only oats to show the importance of grains and carbohydrates in one’s diet. The second week, fruits and vegetables are added to the diet followed by protein the third week. The first three weeks one rat drinks milk and the other rat gets sugar water. “We measure and weigh the rats each week to track the difference in growth,” said Greiwe. “During the final week, we keep the diet the same except we switch the beverage.”
He explained that the experiment provides a great opportunity to talk to kids about their own health. “We look at the food pyramid, track their food intake, record the kinds of exercise we get, discuss the reasons for a balanced diet and make a plan for staying healthy,” he said. “The kids also learn how to read food labels.”

Fourth grader Kaity Leighton doesn’t hesitate to reach into a cage for Snowball in order to determine the rat’s weight. Owen Fleming stands ready with a vented container to hold the rat while it’s placed on the scales that teacher David Greiwe sets up.
Balancing the scales with weights, Kaity Leighton and Owen Fleming determine whether or not Snowball the rat, held in a vented container, has gained weight during the last week. Students also measure the rats’ tales to chart growth.
