Under the Sun Market opened its second store in Greenwood with a mission — to rethink how they make food accessible.

Under the Sun buys liquidated products, primarily food, and sells it at a discount. The store also carries a smaller selection of general merchandise, such as household goods and shoes. Inventory will rotate.

Zach Hendershot, president of Under the Sun, says the company started as a small liquidation company out of a garage and is now expanding as a retail model. UTS’s other location in Indianapolis is located in a food desert. They’re trying to fulfill the gaps left by stores such as Marsh.

“Being in that community, we’ve actually identified some needs since being open there,” Hendershot says. “That initiative kind of became part of our DNA, and now it’s part of our mission to offer those products in those areas, in addition to other markets such as Greenwood.”

Under the Sun recently partnered with local farmers to get different types of produce into their stores.

“Our store is unique and sort of different,” Hendershot adds. “When people come in, it’s all about the experience. We want to offer value to our customers by getting the low-cost items but also by having a rotating inventory that makes itself exciting.”

Hendershot says the employee’s goal of greeting each customer by name and a markdown cycle that has general merchandise item prices reduced each week, sets them apart from other discount stores.

“It’s kind of a thrill to come in and shop, see what you can find and to save,” Hendershot says. “On every visit, you’re going to save money. We guarantee that.” Under the Sun Market is located at 640 U.S. Highway 31 S Greenwood, IN 4614.
