Coinciding with the Thanksgiving Holiday and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, the global #GivingTuesday initiative will inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to charities and causes they support and help create a better world. Taking place December 3, 2013 – the Tuesday after Thanksgiving – #GivingTuesday will harness the power of social media to create a moment around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are, today, synonymous with holiday shopping.
Mental Health America of Greater Indianapolis is already working hard to keep the holiday giving spirit alive with its annual Gift Lift event. The Gift Lift is a holiday donation drive that provides gifts to clients in local mental health facilities during the holidays. All donations are collected before the annual Give-a-Wrap event where volunteers and staff join together to wrap the gifts collected throughout the season before being delivered to the mental healthcare centers. This event will take place on December 12th, from 10am-12pm. All interested individuals should contact Mark Rozales at mrozales@mhaindy.net.
Each year MHA Indy collects and wraps donated gifts and provides them to clients at local mental health care facilities as part of our annual Gift Lift and Give-a-Wrap events. #GivingTuesday is an inspiring initiative that helps bring together organizations and events, such as Gift Lift, with people in the community who would like to find a way to spread holiday cheer during the season of giving. MHA Indy encourages friends, families, neighbors, and corporate partners to participate in #GivingTuesday this year and find a way to give back to the community, whether that be through donating time, money, or even sharing a hug with someone in need. The point of #GivingTuesday is to encourage people to give back to the community.
“#GivingTuesday is a counter narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism,” said Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation. “The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, and friends and neighbors is the commitment to work together to build a better world.”
Currently, MHA Indy is one of more than 6,720 corporate and not-for-profit organizations who have committed to participate in the initiative. #GivingTuesday is endorsed by Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy, Dorothy A. Johnson Center on Philanthropy, Giving Institute, Giving USA Foundation, and InterACtion. Charity Navigator, Givewell and GuideStar are serving as Charity Advisors. VolunteerMatch is a volunteer advisor to #GivingTuesday.
