Pinocchio’s Original Italian Ice Cream owners Jim and Mandy McGovern, in Greenwood, are teaming up with other local businesses to bring awareness to and support research into Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). The cancer effects the bone marrow preventing it from creating enough healthy blood cells to keep the body from being fatigued. People with MDS require weekly blood transfusions.
The fundraiser will be hosted at Pinocchio’s Original Italian Ice cream Saturday, October 25 from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Proceeds from fundraiser will support research at the IU Simon Cancer Center .
“I was inspired to reach out with a helping hand after receiving news that my friend, Joe Saba, had been diagnosed with this disease, I devastated,” said Mandy McGovern. Myelodysplastic Syndrome can be terminal without a stem cell transplant. The key is to finding a donor that matches. Joe grew up in Johnson County, now he, his wife Joannie, and their two children Matt and Alexis, reside in in the Center Grove area. Joe has always been active in the community, coaching youth sports, fundraising to support Center Grove schools, and many of you know him as your account executive with the Daily Journal.
Pinocchio’s Original Italian Ice cream hosts the fundraiser Saturday, October 25 from 11 a.m. – 9 pm. The daylong event includes a Silent Auction, Face Painting, Corn-hole Tournament, Spin the Wheel for Prizes and live music! T-shirts raising awareness of Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) will be available for purchase.
