Preserving the Moments That Matter

Writer / Michael Durr
Photographer / Ayren Certa

PhotographyRaise your hand if you have a photograph hanging on your wall.

Okay. Put your hands down.

Now ask yourself; Why is that image on the wall? What made me choose that image? How long has that image been there? Does it bring you back to a special time and place?

Photography has been around since all of us can remember. However, we may have lost something with the birth of technology and the ease of sharing images online.

A printed photo of a special moment or person takes on a different type of joy. A tangible joy. Just like opening a package, when we hold a print in our hands we can’t help but truly look at it and wonder or recall what it was like in that moment. We can absorb a print and not be tempted to swipe it away. We can revisit it over and over and over again.

In this digital age, it might be beneficial to pause and preserve some of those moments that truly matter.

We at Broad Ripple Magazine want you to try this exercise. Take out your phone. Look through the images in your capture folder. Which one really tugs on your emotional heartstrings? Send that image to a local printer and order a 4X6in print or maybe even a 5X7in or an 8X10in. Consider framing it, whether you buy one at a local shop or have one custom-made. Then hang it on your wall or give it away as a gift.

If this project resonates with you. You can always take things a step further and purchase a new camera or maybe even jump back in time and find a used film camera.

Perhaps this will inspire you to call upon a professional photographer and schedule a family portrait session, newborn announcement or special event.

Photography“Photos of all nature, whether it be on your phone or you hire a professional, really are invaluable,” says local photographer Ayren Certa. “They are tiny snippets of time, frozen forever, and I think it’s so important that we continue to seek out these moments through family and portrait photography. Every Fall I look forward to the influx of families, eager to have milestones captured to share with the world or the walls in their own home.”

Even as you flip through this magazine and look at the images throughout. Does it take on a different feel than swiping a screen? The images in this printed publication were selected for a reason. They tell a story and were chosen to invoke an emotion.

“Emotion is the key element to my work,” Certa says. “Finding it, evoking it, capturing it and then sending it off to be cherished by clients. There is just something so sweet about seeing that all come to life beyond a screen. In a world where photographs really can last forever, there is merit in tangible art, and I hope everyone has the opportunity to experience that gift.”
