Three Zionsville Police Department officers have graduated from the world’s premier law enforcement learning and research center – the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Chief Robert Knox, now retired Captain Doug Gauthier and just this month, Detective Lieutenant Chuck White.

White began with the FBI National Academy on Oct. 3 and graduated on Dec. 16. His was among 222 law enforcement officers in his class, which included officers from 48 states and 20 countries.

“It was the most fantastic thing I have ever experienced in my life besides becoming a parent,” White said. “I met people from all over the world and compared notes in law enforcement and the different things we are affected by.”

The program is 10 weeks and offers coursework in intelligence theory, terrorism and terrorist mindsets, management science, law, behavioral science, law enforcement communication and forensic science. Officers participate in a range of leadership and specialized training, where they share ideas, techniques and experiences, creating lifelong partnerships.

The course culminated in the Yellow Brick Road challenge – a three-mile marine obstacle course followed by a three-mile run. But what White remembers most is aspects of the coursework.

“One course involved stress management in law enforcement and how to better manage that. I learned so much in that course that I can bring back to the department. That is what I am most excited about – to say that I can bring this back and help other officers. It was a very uplifting experience,” White said.

According to Knox, who graduated from the program in 1997, officers must have a recommendation from the chief or administrative officer of the agency before applying to the program. The FBI then begins the vetting process, which includes background checks, interviews and investigations.

“This is the premier training opportunity for law enforcement across the world,” Knox said. “To be accepted and to get to do this is a huge honor.”

Both Gautheir and Knox attended White’s graduation in Quantico. On Jan. 1, White will be promoted to Captain.
