A Mom’s Life of Pie

Ask Kelly Maucere, owner of My Sugar Pie, about her favorite childhood memory and it would be learning to bake homemade pies as a little girl in her mother’s kitchen. Holidays and get-togethers all centered around the family and the almost-lost-art of baking pies from scratch. From measuring and mixing to rolling out the pie crust, this mother and daughter created much more than a tantalizing dessert. They were creating memories and a recipe for success.

Because of the strong work ethic and sense of honesty instilled by her parents, Kelly learned not only how to be a wonderful pie baker, but also a savvy business woman. Her mother and father challenged, nurtured, and supported Kelly all her life. To this day, her mother drives almost 2 hours to Zionsville to help Kelly in the kitchen during her busy holiday and summer season. With Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and a plethora of summertime parties right around the corner, it’s likely that you will encounter her mother’s smiling face behind the counter.

Kelly’s mom is the creator of approximately 75% of the pie recipes at My Sugar Pie. “Mom’s Original” Dutch Apple Pie is usually the #1 favorite. But there is another pie that has earned special recognition, too.

Country Living Magazine hosted a contest to find the nation’s most delicious mail-order pies. Kelly submitted her Sugar Cream Pie, which is the Indiana State Pie (by the way), and it was voted one of the Top 10 pies in the country. There are many days when her Sugar Cream Pie outsells “Mom’s Original” Dutch Apple Pie, so the two flavors volley for most popular. Third on the list is her mouth-watering Cherry Pie.

The Joy of Baking

Initially selling pies at the Farmer’s Market in Zionsville, Kelly used the kitchen at Cobblestone Grill to hone her craft. After three years of successfully selling pies at the Farmer’s Market, many of her friends suggested that she open a full-time pie shop. In 2011, that dream became a reality when she opened My Sugar Pie at 40 E. Pine Street in downtown Zionsville. Her company’s name is the term of endearment that her mother calls Kelly’s two little boys. Her grandsons are the “Sugar Pies” in her life!

Business has now expanded to providing pies for Cobblestone Grill, St. Elmo’s Steak House, Harry & Izzy’s, and the Omni Severin. In addition, the store ships nationwide to the continental United States. Visitors even come from out of state to sit down and enjoy a slice of pie at her shop.

My Sugar Pie also heavily supports local charity events, such as Zionsville Relay for Life, ZCS, and Habitat for Humanity. Giving back is a rewarding part of Kelly’s community involvement.

So the next time that you need a moment to relax and reflect, stop in My Sugar Pie for a slice or whole pie to sweeten your day.
