When Wendi Louks and Amy Talbott opened Blooms by Dragonfly in February 2016, they wanted to create a service-oriented business that would allow them to develop personal relationships with their customers while making others smile. Two years later, they say everything’s coming up roses, hydrangeas, tulips and more and they couldn’t be happier with the result.

“It’s been amazing,” Louks says. “Flowers bring joy to everyone and can be incorporated into every occasion. Flowers are an instant mood lifter. There really is no bad time to receive flowers.”

Before becoming Zionsville’s premier floral designers, Louks and Talbott were ticket brokers who helped their clients locate the hottest tickets in town and buy the best seats for their budget. However, when the ticket resale industry became more price-competitive and Internet-based, the pair decided to look for a new line of work. They saw a need in Zionsville for a flower shop and thought it was the kind of business that would benefit from their special skill set.

“We know a lot about developing personal relationships, offering great customer service and giving people something unique that they can’t get anywhere else,” Talbott says.

Unlike traditional flower stores that rely on a catalogue of traditional arrangements, Blooms by Dragonfly eschews the tried-and-true in favor of the more atypical. Talbott personally selects only the freshest, most beautiful blooms from her wholesalers mixing perennial favorites with a wide range of unusual varieties for a spur-of-the-moment bouquet or an original custom creation.

“We don’t go by the book and we don’t use a recipe,” Talbott says. “We listen to our customers and try to exceed their expectations.”

Although they have only been in business for two years, the ladies say they have experienced tremendous growth and are thrilled with the customer response they have received. Naturally there are challenges as well, especially during prom season when Talbott’s creativity is put to the test. With 200 orders to fill in a few weekends, she knows the kids are counting on her team to come up with something distinct, dazzling and above all fresh.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s always fun,” she says.

Not only have they become the area’s go-to gals for spectacular centerpieces, beautiful bouquets and special occasion sprays, but Blooms by Dragonfly also offers a wide assortment of gift options that can be purchased alone or included in a floral design. Selections include Donaldson’s Chocolate, Mud Pie and Elegant Baby gift items and home décor as well as memorial stones and jewelry created by local artisans.

“We love being able to include these items into our arrangements so that someone not only gets flowers, but a keepsake gift as well,” Louks says.

Louks and Talbott say that Zionsville’s quaint downtown district has been the perfect place to launch their venture and the other local businesses have been extremely supportive of their efforts.

“It’s been wonderful to be part of that network and know that we are not on our own here,” Louks says. “We know the best is yet to come.”
